East Coast Gaffer and bosun of ‘Pioneer’, the oldest Colchester smack still sailing brings a little bit of exciting news.
‘Pioneer’ joined the 2026 Colne Smack & Sailing Barge match on Saturday 5 September and I was crew, We won three Trophies! Cock of the Colne trophy and pennant for overall win, Dick Norris trophy for fastest traditional smack and Skipper Simon Whitehouse won the skipper’s Trophy. I’m very proud, considering we had guests helming, some who have never helmed before I think that’s a pretty amazing achievement.
‘Pioneer’ will also be in Ipswich over the weekend 12 – 13 September as part of the Heritage Open Days. Come and take a look around!
