What’s on in Harwich Harbour, 14 – 16 June, 2024?

Two events for classic boats will be taking place over the weekend of 14 – 16 June, 2024. This should be a great spectacle of classic sail in Harwich Harbour. Which event will you take part in?

Pin Mill Smack & Bawley Classic Race

After the enforced Pandemic break coupled with the unfortunate postponement of last year’s event due to gale force winds Pin Mill SC would like to invite Owners, Skippers, and crews to compete in the Pin Mill SC Smack and Bawley Classic Race: 15 June 2024.

The start line will be in Butterman’s Bay, just below Pin Mill, with the finish line of the PMSC. The course, subject to weather conditions should take craft out to Stone Banks / Medusa Buoy, returning through Harwich Harbour and a maybe a short leg into the River Stour before heading back up the River Orwell to Pin Mill on the flood tide. On Friday evening, 14 July, 2024 the Pin Mill SC Clubhouse will be open with its well-stocked bar plus the availability of burgers, hot dogs etc. A short skippers briefing will take place at 20.30 hrs, Friday 14 July where entry forms and course cards will be available. These can be downloaded from the PMSC website prior to the event. On Saturday evening, following the racing, the Club will again be open from 17.30 for the bar and a BBQ meal served from 18.00 onwards, at a cost of £ 8.00 per head. The prize giving will take place at approx. 21.00 hrs.

Everybody at Pin Mill Sailing Club very much looks forward to welcoming all competing crews and craft and seeing the spectacle of many tan sails on the Orwell and Stour.

Suffolk Yacht Harbour Classic Regatta

The leading racing weekend on the East Coast for classic sail and motor yachts is an annual event held at Suffolk Yacht Harbour (SYH) and hosted by Haven Ports Yacht Club. Founded in 2002, the regatta welcomes everyone from keen racers to social sailors. There is also a cruising class for classic motor yachts. On-the-water action is complemented by camaraderie ashore, including a regatta party and live music. More details, including entry forms, available on the SYH website.

Last year several OGA boats took part in the event, including the Deben Cherubs who will also be participating this year. Look out for them on the official video from 2023.

The regatta has evolved into a three-day event comprising an optional early evening race (not part of the overall series) on the Friday, followed by a three-race series over Saturday and Sunday. IRC points racing for fast, slow and Stella classes takes place in Dovercourt Bay, Harwich Harbour, and the Orwell and Stour estuaries. Entry criteria requires sailing and motor yachts to be pre-1970 design of traditional construction. Sailing yachts should have a Bermuda or gaff rig and be built of wood or steel. Modern classic yachts with wooden or steel hulls are also welcome.
