Tollesbury Rally, 2018

5 May, 2018 saw 8 boats from the OGA small boat fleet take on an equal number of boats from the Tollesbury Sailing Club. Since this number included two boats that were members of both organisations 14 boats crossed the start line on perfect conditions with bright blue skies and a light easterly breeze. With the wind from the east a circuit of Cobmarsh Island would provide too long a beat so a course was set closer to the club.

Faster boats went round the course twice, with the slower ones only managing one circuit due to the need to get to the hard soon after high water so the boats could be recovered. The Kings Head provided a lovely, but Madras hot, chicken curry with rice, tortilla, and plenty of minty yoghurt on the side to cool the heat down.

Tollesbury took first prize with ‘Fancy Pants’, a plywood GP14 built in 1954, while ‘Papa Little’, the gafferer took line honours and the Concourse d’Elegance. ‘Neva’ was first Smack boat, winning the seamanship award for sailing safely and competitively with a 3 year old on board. Henry enjoyed being aboard for the race! A 3 piece rockabilly band provided music the after the prize giving.

Due to prior commitments most people headed home after breakfast on the Sunday morning, but a couple of OGA boats did launch on Sunday afternoon for a sail and the baked potato and chilli supper was well attended by Tollesbury sailing club members.
