It is with great sadness that we hear George Collins, Ramsholt Harbourmaster died peacefully on Boxing Day, 26 December 2023.
George had worked on the quay at Ramsholt on the River Deben in Suffolk since 1960, taking over from his father in 1983. Aged 92, when he was forced to retire due to ill health, he was thought to be the oldest harbourmaster in the country. He was well-known for his fount of local knowledge of the River Deben and local weather. Max Durrant, of The Ramsholt Arms, said: “The outpouring of love for him has just been incredible. He was there literally every day, including Christmas Day. He epitomised the whole place. He was the connection between the people on the water and the people on the land.”
“Much loved and very missed, every member of the River Deben community will be saddened by this news.”
